FORGE DELIVERS
Cycleway Infrastructure
FORGE specialises in the design and delivery of access structures that create more connected cycling and active transport networks in Australian communities.
FORGE was engaged under the CPB Ghella UGL Joint Venture to deliver eight critical community access structures as part of the wider M6 Motorway Stage 1 project for Transport for NSW—designated as state-significant infrastructure by the NSW Government.
FORGE specialises in the design and delivery of access structures that create more connected cycling and active transport networks in Australian communities. Completing missing links within existing active transport routes, we partner with councils, governments and developers on pedestrian and cycleway bridges, shared-path bridges and crossings, boardwalks and elevated pathways that link communities safely across waterways, wetlands and other challenging terrain.
Our team excels in balancing connectivity, accessibility and environmental issues, integrating structures seamlessly within surrounding access routes and transport networks. From concept through to completion, FORGE delivers cost-effective cycleway infrastructure that brings communities together safely, sensitively and in a way that is built to last.

During a complex approvals process our role also included significant stakeholder liaison with Economic Development Queensland and Sunshine Coast City Council. The project also required precision bridge lifts on site.
-
Casino Suspension Bridge
Casino Suspension BridgeStretching 160 metres across the Richmond River in northern NSW, FORGE was appointed as principal contractor to deliver a landmark cable suspension bridge for Richmond Valley Council following a competitive tender. As well as providing local pedestrians and cyclists with a safe and direct connection between South Casino and the town centre, the new bridge provided a critical flood mitigation measure.
Design, Engineering & Project Delivery
-
What types of cycleway structures does FORGE design and build?
FORGE has a proven catalogue of proprietary community access solutions suitable for single and multiple-span applications, each with the flexibility to make custom embellishments based on a project’s specific site, budget and aesthetic requirements. Our specialist in-house design team is also able to develop completely unique bridge, boardwalk and cycleway solutions as and when required, including prototyping and testing. The right design will always depend on the project itself.
-
How long does it take for FORGE to design and construct cycleway structures and bridges?
Every project is unique so there’s no general rule. It may be just a few months for a simple structure on an easy-to-access site. Then again, it can be considerably longer from concept to completion for more complex applications. Large or small, the key to a streamlined project outcome is early engagement with all key stakeholders and ongoing collaboration.
-
Can cycleway structures be manufactured and pre-assembled off-site for quicker installation?
Yes they can and in many cases that’s exactly what we recommend and do for all of our projects. By intentionally designing these access structures in modular form where possible, the main structural elements can often be fully or partially pre-assembled in controlled conditions off-site. This maximises quality while also minimising installation time. The result is greater savings and reduced community disruptions.
-
Can FORGE design structures that cater to both pedestrians and cyclists?
Absolutely. In fact the vast majority of elevated boardwalks and bridges FORGE designs and constructs around Australia each year cater to pedestrians, joggers, cyclists and other other active transport users. A key early stage of the FORGE Methodology is taking the time to understand exactly who will be using the completed structure and making suitable design decisions accordingly to ensure maximum safety and ease of access at all times, for all users.
-
What is FORGE’s process for delivering a custom cycleway or boardwalk project from design to installation?
The FORGE Methodology is built upon a wholistic delivery offering that combines specialist design and design verification, structural engineering, manufacturing methodology, risk mitigation, planning capability, pre-assembly, project management and construction expertise, all from one team. Time and again we see the most successful project outcomes when our team is engaged early in the development process.
-
Do you collaborate with landscape architects, engineers and local authorities?
Absolutely, in fact we find the more collaboration on community access projects the better - especially in the critical early design stages of the project. By partnering up-front with all key stakeholders and delivery experts we can collaboratively identify the very best solution for your brief, long before you need to commit to a construction contract. The result is almost always a higher quality and more cost effective project outcome.
Site Conditions, Environment & Compliance
-
Can FORGE design cycleways and boardwalks for environmentally sensitive areas?
FORGE specialises in the design and construction of active transport structures in environmentally sensitive and remote habitats. We have successfully delivered numerous bridges and boardwalks in national parks and nature reserves, using proven ‘light touch’ design and construction approaches that maximise community value whilst minimising environmental impacts both during and after construction.
-
What materials are best for cycleway structures in coastal, creek or wetland environments?
High strength, lightweight materials with the correctly-specified finishings are essential to maximise the design life of access structures located in coastal, creek and wetland environments which often feature unique soil conditions and can be subjective to harsh weather conditions.
-
How does FORGE ensure environmental sustainability during the construction process?
FORGE has extensive experience in designing and constructing cycleways and other access structures that maximise environmental sustainability. This begins with the design of the structure itself, with great care taken to ensure the design and materials always have the lightest possible environmental footprint while still meeting all functional and safety requirements of the project brief. The design also has a direct influence on the installation stage with steps taken to minimise - and often completely eliminate - the need for heavy machinery on site, reducing noise, emissions and habitat disruption. Specifying hard-wearing and lightweight materials can also significantly reduce the amount of future maintenance required.
-
How does FORGE ensure safety and compliance for public-use cycleways, bridges an boardwalks?
Safety is central to every project decision at FORGE and begins with the initial design of your structure. Considerable thought is given to both structural integrity and user security. From an engineering perspective, cycleway structures must be designed in line with all relevant AS codes and guidelines, ensuring they withstand not only the weight of pedestrian and bicycle traffic but also environmental factors such as soil conditions, wind and weather, tides and potential flooding events. User security considerations extend to the provision of appropriate balustrades, non-slip surfaces, clear sight lines, seamless access points, rest areas and seating and potentially lighting to ensure high-traffic structures feel safe and welcoming for all users - at all hours.
-
Can cycleway links and other access structures be customised to suit unique site conditions like slopes, wetlands or coastal areas?
Yes they can - and should. Customising a structure’s design and materials to the specific site is an essential part of the FORGE Methodology. An extensive range of variables are taken into careful consideration to ensure a fit-for-purpose structure that delivers decades of trouble-free benefits for the community it was built to serve.
-
Can FORGE design and install cycleways, bridges and boardwalks for remote or hard-to-access sites?
Yes, we can. In fact FORGE specialises in delivering access structures like these in remote, hard-to-access and environmentally-sensitive sites including national parks and conservation reserves. We have developed an award-winning proprietary catalogue of customisable access solutions that offer excellent cost-efficiencies and durability with minimal need for heavy equipment during construction and installation.
-
Can FORGE build cycleways, bridges and boardwalks in protected or environmentally sensitive areas like national parks or conservation areas?
Yes. FORGE has considerable experience in delivering access structures in some of Australia’s most pristine locations and national parks. Of course, working within sensitive and protected habitats requires meticulous planning and project management guided by strict environmental management protocols that have been pre-approved by all relevant authorities.
-
How do you minimise environmental impact during construction?
Considerable time is spent during the initial design and pre-construction stages of every access project to identify potential environmental risks - and mitigate them long before construction and site works begin. Clever design plays major role, as does the development of a detailed environmental management plan that is approved by all relevant stakeholders and environmental authorities. Some of our most impressive projects were able to be entirely constructed by hand, including manually-driven piles and materials that were carried to the site on foot, to eliminate any impacts on the surrounding habitat.
