Landmark Structures

FORGE specialises in bringing landmark visions to life for outdoor structures. We transform iconic concepts into resolved and buildable structures while always protecting the original design intent.

FORGE specialises in bringing landmark visions to life for outdoor structures. We transform iconic concepts into resolved and buildable structures while always protecting the original design intent. Every year we partner with landscape architects, artists and designers on custom outdoor structures where architecture, art and engineering intersect.

This includes anything from public art and culturally significant installations to sculptural canopies, architectural landscape elements and landmark play structures. Our team excels in delivering complex, unconventional visions using rigorous design resolution thinking and advanced parametric modelling to solve design challenges others can’t. Through a comprehensive material testing, prototyping and pre-construction process we ensure every bespoke outdoor artwork performs as beautifully as it looks, delivering landmark infrastructure projects that stand the test of time.

Sculptural Landmark Case Studies

  • M12 Eucalypt Leaf Canopies
    M12 Eucalypt Leaf Canopies

FORGE was appointed alongside Indigenous design and strategy agency Balarinji to detail, manufacture and deliver a series of giant ‘eucalypt leaf’ shade canopies for Transport for NSW alongside Sydney’s new M12 Motorway. Large in scale and highly intricate in design, the stunning canopies feature integrated lighting and represent the diverse seasons of western Sydney, Dharug Country.

  • Timeflows Public Artwork
    Timeflows Public Artwork

This stunning public artwork was delivered by FORGE for Blacktown City Council at the Blacktown International Sports Park. Designed by Michael Cohen, Chris Fox and Shay Tobin it celebrates Ngurra, or Dharug Country, and explores the history of land and water through interwoven strands of time.

  • Adelaide Arbours
    Adelaide Arbours

As part of the Adelaide Festival Plaza redevelopment, FORGE developed, prototyped, manufactured and installed a series of hexagonal arbours. Intricate perforated mesh panels create shifting patterns of light and shade, while the interconnected forms establish a striking canopy across the public realm.

Design, Project and Collaboration Delivery

  • How long does it take for FORGE to design and construct a custom landmark structure?

  • How does FORGE ensure bespoke landmark design visions can actually be built without being comprised?

  • Can custom landmark structures be manufactured and pre-assembled off-site for quicker installation?

  • What is FORGE’s process for delivering a custom landmark structures from design to installation?

  • Do you collaborate with landscape architects, engineers and local authorities?

Site, Safety & Landmark Structure Experience

  • How does FORGE ensure safety and compliance for public landmark structures?

  • Which regions or states do you service for landmark structure construction?

  • Has FORGE worked with local councils on custom landmark outdoor structures?

  • How do site conditions affect the design and construction process?

  • Can FORGE build landmark structures in remote, protected or environmentally sensitive areas?

Related Projects

FORGE has been delivering landmark structures in Australian communities for over 50 years. Here are more of our projects.

  • Cold Tea Creek Pedestrian Bridge

Located 140km north of Sydney at Lake Macquarie, the Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Track on Belmont Lagoon has existed for almost a quarter of a century but had never been fully completed. FORGE was engaged by Lake Macquarie City Council alongside Glascott Landscape & Civil to help change that, replacing an old and narrow footbridge with a landmark 25-metre single span pedestrian bridge across one of the track's final remaining natural obstacles, Cold Tea Creek.

  • Denman Village Playground

Located less than 2.5km from Canberra’s renowned Mount Stromlo Observatory, the night sky was the creative inspiration for an all-new community park and playground to be known as Denman Prospect CRIP (Community Recreation Irrigated Park).

Designed by award-winning landscape architects, Spiire, the vision included multiple astronomy-themed elements including a centrepiece 8m-high play dome and three hanging spherical play structures, connected by an elevated boardwalk with Millboard Smoked Oak decking and intricate powder-coated aluminium cladding and soffits.

  • Dawson Mall Arbour

Blacktown is the fastest-growing LGA in NSW. To provide expanded public spaces and much-needed community facilities, Blacktown City Council approved the $27 million transformation of the Mount Druitt Town Centre in late 2019.

FORGE (formerly Fleetwood Urban) was formally contracted to deliver one of the most visible pillars of the Masterplan – a kaleidoscopic curved custom arbour snaking its way through leafy Dawson Mall.

  • Googong ANZAC Memorial

Googong is a fast-growing township near Queanbeyan, less than 16km from Parliament House in Canberra. The ambitious 780-hectare masterplan is being co-delivered by Mirvac and Peet and, when complete, will be home to more than 18,000 people.

Servicing such a large and dynamic residential community requires a significant amount of accessible open space and amenity.

  • Peninsula Playground

Broadwater Parklands at Southport is one of the Gold Coast’s most iconic foreshore parks. As part of the ongoing delivery of the City of Gold Coast’s multi-million-dollar Broadwater Parklands Masterplan, FORGE (formerly Fleetwood Urban) was engaged early (EOI stage) to partner with landscape architects AECOM to detail and deliver a ‘destination’ play structure to attract visitors from across South East Queensland and beyond.

Fully custom and hugely complex, the key elements delivered by FORGE (formerly Fleetwood Urban) comprised an 18-metre ‘Shell’ spiral tower with four levels of interactive play and an adjoining horizontal play structure.
