Design, Project and Collaboration Delivery
-
What types of viewing platforms and lookouts do FORGE design and build?
The FORGE project portfolio features a wide range of community lookouts and viewing platform structures, large and small. These include wetland boardwalks with accessible paths and viewing areas, elevated lookouts, skywalks and complex cliff-edge structures. Every project is unique and our in-house design team carefully assesses each brief before making any recommendations.
-
How long does it take for FORGE to design and construct a custom viewing platform?
Every project and site brings its own challenges. It may be just a few months on site for a simple lookout on an easy-to-access site. Then again, it can be considerably longer from concept to completion for more complex applications. Large or small, the key to a streamlined project outcome is early engagement with all key stakeholders and ongoing collaboration.
-
Can FORGE design and install viewing platforms for remote or hard-to-access sites?
Yes, we can. FORGE specialises in delivering outdoor access structures and lookouts in remote, hard-to-access and environmentally-sensitive sites including some of Australia’s most pristine locations and national parks. Of course, working within sensitive and protected habitats requires meticulous planning and project management guided by strict environmental management protocols that have been pre-approved by all relevant authorities.
-
Has FORGE worked with local councils on viewing platform projects?
For more than 50 years FORGE has partnered with LGAs well as national parks across Australia, delivering viewing platforms everywhere from Queensland and regional Victoria to the very heart of the Sydney CBD. At last count we have successful delivered projects for more than 50 different Australian councils.
-
What is FORGE’s process for delivering a viewing platform project from design to installation?
The FORGE Methodology is built upon a wholistic delivery offering that combines specialist design and design verification, structural engineering, manufacturing methodology, risk mitigation, planning capability, pre-assembly, project management and construction expertise, all from one team. Time and again we see the most successful project outcomes when our team is engaged early in the development process.
-
Do you collaborate with landscape architects, engineers and local authorities?
Absolutely, in fact we find the more collaboration on viewing platform projects the better - especially in the critical early design stages of the project. By partnering up-front with all key stakeholders and delivery experts we can collaboratively identify the very best solution for your brief, long before you need to commit to a construction contract. The result is almost always a higher quality and more cost-effective project outcome.
-
What is the typical lifespan of a FORGE-built viewing platform?
Operational lifespan can vary significantly between structures and is dependent on many factors. These include the location, size, weather and soil conditions, construction materials, usage volume, the style of structure chosen and the level ongoing maintenance able to be provided. At FORGE we work closely with clients and project partners to maximise the design life of every structure we deliver and offer industry-leading structural guarantees to provide peace of mind for all stakeholders for years to come.
Site, Safety & Experience
-
Can FORGE deliver viewing platforms and lookouts in environmentally sensitive areas?
Yes. Many of Australia’s most popular lookouts are found in remote and sensitive locations and this is where FORGE brings considerable project expertise. FORGE specialises in the design and construction of viewing platforms and connecting access structures such as boardwalks in environmentally sensitive habitats. We have successfully delivered numerous structures in national parks and pristine nature reserves, using proven ‘light touch’ design and construction approaches that maximise community value whilst minimising environmental impacts both during and after construction.
-
What materials are best for viewing platforms in coastal, creek or wetland environments?
High strength, lightweight materials with the correctly specified finishings are essential to maximise the design life of viewing platforms and boardwalks in coastal, creek and wetland environments which often feature unique soil conditions and are subject to harsh weather conditions also.
-
How does FORGE ensure environmental sustainability during the construction process?
FORGE has extensive experience in delivering viewing platforms and lookouts that maximise environmental sustainability. This begins with the design itself, with great care taken to ensure the structure and materials always have the lightest possible environmental footprint while still meeting all functional and safety requirements of the project brief. The design also has a direct influence on the installation methodology with steps taken to minimise the need for heavy machinery on site, reducing noise, emissions and habitat disruption. Specifying hard-wearing and lightweight materials can also significantly reduce the amount of future maintenance required.
-
Can viewing platforms and lookouts be manufactured and pre-assembled off-site for quicker installation?
Often they can - and in many situations that’s exactly what we recommend and do. By intentionally designing structures in modular form, the main structural elements can often be fully or partially pre-assembled in controlled conditions off-site. This maximises quality while also minimising installation time. The result is greater savings and reduced community and habitat disruption.
-
How does FORGE ensure safety and compliance for public-use viewing platforms?
Safety is critical to every project decision at FORGE and begins with the initial design of your structure. Considerable thought is given to both structural integrity and user security. From an engineering perspective, viewing platforms and the boardwalks/paths that connect to them must be designed in line with all relevant AS codes and guidelines, ensuring they withstand not only the weight of pedestrian traffic but also environmental factors such as soil conditions, wind and weather, tides and potential flooding events. User security considerations extend to the provision of appropriate balustrades, non-slip surfaces, clear sight lines, seamless access points, rest areas and seating and potentially lighting to ensure high-traffic areas feel safe and welcoming at all hours.
-
Can viewing platforms be customised to suit unique and complex site conditions?
Yes they can and should. Customising a structure’s design and materials to the specific site is an essential part of the FORGE Methodology. An extensive range of variables are taken into careful consideration to ensure a fit-for-purpose structure that delivers decades of trouble-free benefits for the community it was built to serve. FORGE has built its reputation on the ability to deliver outstanding project outcomes even when faced with complex access, public safety, environmental and installation requirements.
-
