Process

What is the FORGE process?

All projects are guided by our proprietary delivery process – the FORGE Method – developed and refined over 50 years of experience delivering award-winning projects across Australia. At the heart of this, we are more than just a supplier or project manager; we’re a team of highly skilled experts who bring seamless capability to every stage of any project, from concept to completion.

Time and again, we find early engagement drives the best project outcomes. By bringing us in during the initial stages of your project, our methodology enables us to collaborate with your key project stakeholders to bring their concepts and visions to life, mitigating the risk of quality compromises or costly variations resulting in overspending.

Our builders think like designers, and our designers think like builders – by co-designing with our people, who also build your structures, this approach means less waste and inefficiency, more accurate costings, and a better end result.

Our end-to-end service includes engineering design, shop detailing, project management, manufacturing (all done within Australia), off-site pre-assembly, installation and, should you choose, ongoing maintenance.

How does FORGE customise play structures to fit specific project needs?

Collaboration is everything, and we recommend it at every stage of your project. First we’ll sit down with you and your design team to understand the brief and vision behind your custom play concept. Next we’ll work together to explore all the rich creative potential of your concept, with particular attention given to modification that help to maximise play value and ‘buildability’ with your budget. From here we’ll develop and refine your chosen concept into detailed construction drawings (often with input from accredited play auditors to ensure compliance), ready for fabrication, pre-assembly and careful installation on site. We provide a true end-to-end solution.

Does FORGE (previously Fleetwood Urban) consult with other play specialists to create innovative play solutions?

Yes we do. In fact, many of our clients are play specialists themselves, including some of Australia's most respected design and landscape architecture firms. We love partnering with them to bring their visions into reality. For your peace of mind, we also work through the play structure designs with trusted third-party Play auditors. This ensures every play structure we deliver meets – and often exceeds – all required Australian safety standards.

Can FORGE manage the entire project, from initial concept to final delivery?

Yes. At FORGE we’re more than just a supplier or project manager; we’re a dedicated team of highly skilled experts who bring seamless capability to every stage of any project, from concept to completion. Our builders think like designers, and our designers think like builders. This mindset removes uncertainty and risk while simplifying complexity.

Who do you deal with for your projects?

Each year we partner with many of Australia’s leading landscape architects, architects, local councils, state government bodies and top-tier property developers.

Where do you deliver projects?

We specialise in delivering bespoke shade, access and play structures in communities and LGAs across Australia. With dedicated national pre-assembly facilities and local project delivery teams based in Sydney, Brisbane and Geelong, we work extensively with clients across metropolitan and regional areas of New South Wales, Victoria and South-East Queensland. We also work increasingly with clients in South Australia.

How bespoke are your shade designs?

Landscape architects and designers love to partner with FORGE because we have a passion for collaboration and adding real-world value that brings their custom visions to life. Backed by decades of experience and in-house expertise, we also don’t shy away from complexity, working closely with architects and landscape designers to identify best-practice solutions that ensure their bespoke designs are realised in a way that meets their exacting creative, client and site requirements.

Can I bring you a custom design to manufacture and install?

We love to partner with designers, architects and landscape architects to bring their bespoke designs to life. Working together we will develop and refine your original concept, before developing detailed shop drawings and progressing into the engineering, manufacturing and installation stages of your custom structure(s). It’s what we do best and why many of our clients partner with us over and over again.

How scalable are FORGE’s design solutions for different project sizes?

With a track record of success spanning over 50 years, FORGE has the in-house expertise and resources to deliver outdoor projects of virtually any size and nature. We are specialists at realising the creative visions for large and highly complex custom projects; our team thrives on solving interesting challenges.

Can FORGE customise access structures to fit specific project needs?

Absolutely. We love to customise access structures so they are perfectly suited to the unique needs of a project. For some projects the custom modifications will only be small, whilst for others they can be quite extensive. It all depends on the site, budget and deliverables required.

What are the benefits of choosing FORGE pre-engineered designs versus bespoke designs?

Over the past 50 years we have developed a series of proprietary pre-engineered design systems. Whilst these are not suitable for all project briefs, they can be adapted to the needs of many outdoor projects, providing excellent upfront clarity on costs, materials and the resulting design outcome. Often, the base design can also be customised, providing a hybrid solution offering the ‘best of both worlds.’

How does FORGE handle projects in challenging or hard-to-access locations?

We are highly experienced in handling all manner of projects in locations which are hard to access or otherwise present challenges. We have a wide network of experts who we draw upon to extend our capabilities when required, and we know exactly how to ensure risk and cost is minimised, without unwelcome surprises.

What types of play structures does FORGE specialise in?

FORGE specialises in bespoke play structures. Backed by decades of hands-on design and delivery experience, our in-house specialists have realised the creative visions for some of Australia’s most award-winning play structures and bring tremendous value to your project. Guided by our proprietary project methodology, we will work closely with you and your team at every stage – from initial design through to final installation – delivering custom play structures that perfectly meet your site, needs, budget and creative intent.

What is FORGE’s approach to ensuring safety in playground designs?

Are your materials sustainable?

We always endeavour to specify materials and finishes that deliver the best result for the specific site and design needs of our clients. While structural steel and Australian Class 1 hardwood timbers are amongst the most common materials we utilise, we are not limited to using any one type of material. We focus on the fit-for-purpose longevity of materials, so your structure withstands the test of time, maximising Design Life and minimising the waste and potential habitat impacts caused by redesigns, maintenance and replacement. The Australian hardwoods we specify are always sustainably sourced with documented chains of custody able to be supplied on request

What ESG measures does FORGE have in place?

As a forward-thinking business with a deep love for the outdoors, we’re committed to sustainability and incorporating comprehensive Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) measures across our operations. Accredited to global best practice standards, we focus on reducing our carbon footprint through innovative green building designs, energy-efficient technologies, and the incorporation of renewable energy sources. See our Sustainability Policy. {LINK SUSTAINABILITY PAGE}

From the design and materiality of our outdoor structures to the way they are manufactured, installed and maintained, we always prioritise responsible resource management and the protection of the sensitive habitats that surround them - before, during and after installation. These efforts not only enhance the ecological health of urban areas but also contribute to the global agenda to combat climate change.

Socially, FORGE seeks to foster inclusive and resilient communities by emphasising human-centric designs that promote accessibility, safety, and wellbeing. Partnering with our clients, we also seek to engage with local communities, using their feedback to ensure the design of every project reflects their true needs and aspirations, thereby fostering a sense of ownership and belonging.

Our governance measures are robust, with transparent and ethical decision-making processes that align with global best practices. FORGE is certified in ISO 14001 for environmental management, ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety, and ISO 9001 for quality management. These certifications underscore our commitment to maintaining high standards across all aspects of our operations, ensuring sustainable and equitable urban development. Is your fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) recyclable?

Lightweight and highly durable, FRP is an innovative composite product with a long Design Life. This makes it ideal for decking on pedestrian access structures and boardwalks. Elements of FRP panels are already recyclable. As new forms of FRP continue to be developed, no doubt a greater percentage will become fully recyclable.

What materials are typically used in your play structures?

Painted steel, structural steel and sustainably sourced Class 1 Australian hardwood timbers are typically the most common materials used in our play structures. We find Australian hardwood timbers bring tremendous creativity and natural character to play spaces whilst also withstanding the test of time with clever design and preparation. However, it’s important to note we never limit our design thinking to any particular type of materials or finishes. Our focus is always on the making the most appropriate choices to suit the unique requirements of each project.
