Simplifying Complexity: The Methodology Driving Australia’s Most Ambitious Outdoor Builds

Ambition can make all the difference when it comes to outdoor community structures. But it can be fraught—not to mention expensive—if your project partners don’t bring right expertise and processes to deliver your vision confidently in the real world.

No-one strives for mediocrity.

Yet all too often this is what still gets delivered by Australia’s construction industry, as complexity leads to compromise.

Perceived as hard, expensive and risky, an ingrained fear of complexity frequently sees brilliant project visions watered down—and sometimes killed off entirely as ‘playing safe’ is prioritised over ambition.

Thing is, this needn’t be the case. Supported by the right partners and processes your projects can be both safe and ambitious.

Less risk. More clarity.

Here at FORGE we believe the answer isn’t avoiding complexity when it comes to outdoor community structures, but rather actively understanding and simplifying it.

Central to this is having a team of specialists backed by a robust delivery process that identifies risks and complexities in the earliest stages of your projects—turning them into knowns that can be expertly resolved and managed, long before you commit to a construction contract.

It’s a proprietary process we call the FORGE Methodology—and each year we use it to deliver many multimillion-dollar outdoor infrastructure projects across Australia.

Turning ambitious ideas into brilliant realities.

While traditional delivery models effectively force you to accept compromise as inevitable, the FORGE Methodology is the exact opposite.

It’s tailor-made to deliver Australia’s most ambitious design visions in the real world—just as you envisaged—with clarity and confidence. It leaves nothing to chance. No risk unsighted. No stone unturned. What you expect is what you get. Every time.

As you’ll see from our award-winning project portfolio, the results speak for themselves.

Design Scoping Package™—driving project certainty from day one.

A core component of the FORGE Methodology and the launch pad for many of our most successful projects is something known as a Design Scoping Package, or DSP.

For an agreed fee, our in-house Design, Pre-Construction and Construction specialists partner closely with your team to help you develop and refine the most critical parameters of your brief. Options are explored. Risks are identified. Budgets are tested. Milestones are set—and it’s all done long before you sign a construction contract.

It’s a proven process that gives you greater confidence and project certainty from day one, and as you can see from these recent client projects, it works.

Real-world project savings delivered by a DSP™:

FORGE was contracted by Stockland to deliver a family of three new pedestrian bridges with spans ranging from 32 to 57 metres. Despite having vastly differing lengths and locations, all three structures needed to be unified through a common design language.

During pre-construction, the FORGE Methodology enabled us to identify a way to achieve this while also driving major engineering, cost and time efficiencies for Stockland. Rather than design three completely separate bridges, we instead engineered 12-metre span modules and then replicated this for each structure with subtle design embellishments using Corten panelling.

This allowed the project to be delivered with ~25% cost efficiencies due to product standardisation.

On the Alamora Pedestrian Bridge and Boardwalk project in Tarneit, Victoria, FORGE delivered impressive efficiencies for Villawood Properties and LD Total.

While a traditional process for a bridge and boardwalk of this nature would typically take 10-11 months, the structures were completed within budget in less than seven months through the application of the FORGE Methodology.

This result highlights how the FORGE Methodology can significantly reduce program timeframes without compromising on design integrity and budgets.

FORGE was appointed by Horsham Rural City Council as lead contractor to deliver a 73-metre span pedestrian bridge across the Wimmera River. A significant structure in both size and community sensitivity, the FORGE Methodology guided an intensive pre-construction process, considering multiple bridge designs for suitability and feasibility, along with detailed geotechnical studies and engineering analysis.

At a technical level, the scale of the approved structure required millimetre perfect cables and extension rods, demanding meticulous collaboration between multiple engineers, two crane companies and a large multi-faceted rigging team.

To maximise efficiencies and community safety, our Methodology identified that all pylons and substructure elements were best manufactured and pre-assembled off site in controlled conditions. The final installation proceeded smoothly over three days with large crowds of Horsham locals gathering to watch.

The project was delivered 30% faster and with zero cost variations.

Get the best result for your community.

While it may be easy to err on the side of caution and take the path of least resistance when faced with projects risks and budget unknowns, is that what you actually want?

Or do you really just need the confidence of knowing that your preferred vision—the one that brings the most value to your community and stakeholders—can be confidently delivered on time and budget?

The FORGE Methodology and a Design Scoping Package™ can bring market-leading certainty to any outdoor project. To discuss the benefits for your team please get in touch.
